Pool Drain Checklist to Ensure Drain Safety

Below are some things you should always confirm for your drain cover:

  • Is the cover(s) covering all outlets and inlets of your pool or spa?
  • Does the cover have any breaks or cracks that require replacement?
  • Are there any loose or missing screws on the drain cover?
  • Is the cover securely fastened?
  • Have children been warned prior to entering the water to not play with or near drain covers?

General Pool, Hot Tub, and Spa Safety Advice

Aside from ensuring that anti-entrapment drain covers are installed correctly, here are some things you can do to make sure your child is safe in any pool, hot tub, or spa:

  • Talk to your children about the dangers of drains before they head into the water
  • Ensure that an adult is always supervising children in the pool or hot tub
  • Considering investing in a pool safety net or mesh pool fence to keep kids away from the water in the case of minimal adult supervision
  • Ensure that long hair is always tied up in a ponytail or bun before children head into the water
  • Ensure that children have all jewelry removed before entering the water
