Megan Ferraro Discusses Drowning Prevention Strategies on WDIV 4 NBC Detroit

The ZAC Foundation’s Executive Director Megan Ferraro appeared on Local4 Detroit on July 24, 2025 to discuss water safety on World Drowning Prevention Day and to share life-saving strategies in response to the tragic drowning of a 6-year-old at Belle Isle Park in Detroit.

“We know that drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of death for children under the age of 14,” said Megan. “We want everyone to think about how they can be safe around the water. We want you to enjoy the water—but we want you to do it safely.”

In the interview, Megan shared key precautions for families enjoying water activities:

Essential Water Safety Tips

  • Choose life jackets with U.S. Coast Guard certification
  • Enroll all family members in age-appropriate swim classes
  • Take CPR classes to boost survival rates in water emergencies
  • Never leave children unattended around any body of water
  • Refrain from drinking alcohol during water activities

Megan also addressed the dangers of rip currents, as a current was involved in the recent tragedy:

Flip, Float and Follow

  • If caught in a current, flip onto your back, float out of the current, and swim back to shore
  • Always swim in front of a lifeguard—and never swim alone
  • Look for green flags at beach and lakefronts
  • Talk to your lifeguards if you are unsure about water conditions
