Water Safety Is Everywhere: Megan Ferraro Shares Critical Prevention Tips on NBC10 Philadelphia

The ZAC Foundation’s Executive Director Megan Ferraro appeared on NBC10 Philadelphia on Thursday, May 22, 2025. Speaking with the morning show team, Megan shared essential drowning prevention strategies as families prepare for summer water activities and Memorial Day weekend beach trips.

Essential Safety Tips

Megan emphasized that most drownings happen during unplanned swim time when parents think their child is safely inside. Key prevention strategies include installing four-sided isolation fencing around backyard pools, enrolling children in swim classes, learning CPR, and designating a water watcher who takes turns with others to ensure constant supervision. She stressed avoiding alcohol when supervising children around water and teaching kids early—just like we teach them about hot coffee or wearing helmets—not to go near water without an adult.

Prevention Is Possible

“We want families to enjoy the water and have fun,” Megan explained. “We just want there to be a healthy respect for the water and for layers of protection to be implemented.”

She reminded viewers that adults shouldn’t swim alone either—always swim with a buddy or in front of a lifeguard, even if you’re an experienced swimmer.
