End-of-Summer Water Safety Reminders
Ahead of Labor Day weekend, The ZAC Foundation’s Executive Director Megan Ferraro joined Michael Patrick Shiels on Michigan’s Big Show to share water safety reminders for families enjoying Michigan’s lakes, beaches and pools.
The conversation also honored the late Jonathan Ahlbrand, a longtime guest of the show and passionate water safety advocate who served as Vice Flotilla Commander with the U.S. Coast Guard and Vice Commodore of the Lansing Sailing Club.
Water Safety Basics for Families
Ferraro encouraged children and adults to wear properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jackets while on the water and to swim only where lifeguards are present. Families should also pay close attention to posted warnings, especially as seasonal lifeguard coverage and safety systems wind down.
Adults Should Keep Eyes on the Water
At pools and backyard gatherings, active supervision is essential. Caregivers should stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions that can pull attention away from the water. Four-sided pool fences can provide another layer of protection.
Avoid Drowning Risks
Ferraro also reminded listeners that alcohol can impair judgment and reaction time particularly for anyone operating a boat or supervising children. She cautioned against jumping from piers that are not designated for swimming and recommended entering marked swimming areas feet first.
“Just like you would put on sunscreen and you put on other layers of protection, think about that layer of protection with the life jacket, with not consuming alcohol, and really try to be sure that you have a safe and fun holiday weekend.”
