Megan Ferraro Discusses Winter Water and Ice Safety on KYW Newsradio

Water safety is year-round. KYW Newsradio 103.9 FM (Philadelphia, PA) recently featured The ZAC Foundation’s Executive Director Megan Ferraro to discuss the dangers of frozen water, and why winter is a critical time to build water safety skills.

The Dangers of Frozen Water

Frozen bodies of water can be very enticing yet dangerous. Megan was clear: unless you have an ice auger and a ruler to ensure it’s thick enough to skate or play on, you should stay off the ice entirely.

Teaching Water Safety Like Any Other Rule

Megan offered a simple but powerful reminder for parents: water safety is just like any other rule you teach your kids.

“If we can communicate the message that you can’t run across the street without looking both ways or holding an adult’s hand, we can communicate that same message about water safety and ice safety.”

Winter Is a Great Time for Swim Lessons

Megan encouraged families to use the colder months to enroll kids in swim lessons so they’re ready when outdoor swim season arrives.

“The winter is actually a great time to ensure that your kids are learning those skills so that once they can use them outdoors in the pool and in the ocean, they can do so safely.”
